Route One Infrastructure were employed by National Highways to inspect 84 mechanical bearings on the A197 / A1 at Morpeth.
The structure is comprised of two independent sections, each with 3 spans. Each span has a fixed end and free/guided end. Monitoring was also installed on each span for a minimum of 48hours, recording displacement longitudinally, horizontally and vertically as well as the temperature.
The abutments were accessed on foot by climbing the revetments and the pier locations accessed by a MEWP. Due to the location, the inspection was undertaken at night over a two week period.
The report provided to Highways England contained our findings and included recommendations for remedial works on the bearings where required.
